Home grower’s guide

We welcome you to buy Longview Garlic for your kitchen, and you’ll find a list of our fresh and prepared products, and how to buy our garlic, here.

But I believe quite strongly that anyone can grow their own garlic, and I am committed to encouraging and equipping others to do just that. Garlic is very easy to grow, and incredibly satisfying to harvest. It can be grown in the smallest of spaces (even pots), it is an excellent food source for your family, and can also become a source of income if you choose to sell it.

The pages that follow are divided up seasonally, to help you know what to do when, wherever you live in the world*. As a rough guide, here’s what you’ll find (click on any of the seasons to read more, or hover over the “Grow” menu at the top of this page):

Autumn

  • Sow main cloves

  • Gentle feed

Winter

  • Sow late-season cloves

  • Check leaves for health

Spring

  • Feed to promote new growth

  • Harvest green garlic

  • Harvest scapes

Summer

  • Harvest main crop

  • Cure to preserve

  • Prepare soil for next crop

* Obviously these seasons are only guides: how and when you grow your garlic will depend on your local climate, and of course the time and resources you have available. Luckily for all of us, garlic is a hardy and forgiving little plant! Note that when I mention specific months or reference my own habits, I’m speaking from our location in the NSW Southern Tablelands in Australia. Our climate can be quite extreme: long hot summers, with frosts and occasional snows in winter.

These pages are only new but as they grow, I will share more information on how to grow, harvest, cure and cook with your own garlic. If you would like to know more, I regularly share more detailed growing guides and ideas in my free newsletter, to which you can subscribe here.
